Riding Requirement

On a day-long trek in scenic but rugged terrain, riders must meet criteria for their own and our horses' safety.

  • The majority of our weeks require Intermediate riding level due to the length and terrain of our rides.

  • Firm seat with soft hands.

  • Comfortable at a walk, posting trot, and two-point canter.

  • Riding in a group at all paces over varied terrain.

  • Basic horsemanship skills such as catching, grooming, leading, and tacking up.

  • Mount and dismount with minimal aid. (You can use a well-placed rock or log if needed.)

  • Physically fit to be in the saddle for 3–4 hours, or 10–15 miles a day.

  • If the outfitter deems that your level isn’t at an intermediate level during your stay, the ride will be split during the canter, and you will be asked to stay with the walk/trot group.

If you do not feel that you meet this criteria or do not ride regularly, please visit our FAQ page. This will explain why we require skills such as a posting trot and a two-point canter. You can always contact us with any questions regarding riding ability.

If you’re not an intermediate level rider, please contact us for weeks that may be able to accommodate a strong novice.

  • Some of our riding weeks can accommodate a Strong Novice riding level, such as the EquiYoga Retreat and Glamping Ride.

  • Riding less than 5 years.

  • Knows the basic commands to lightly ask the horse to walk forward, turn, stop, and back up.

  • Comfortable at a walk and sitting trot only. Cannot post the trot or two point canter.

  • Never ridden in a group out on trial. Has never naviagted varried terrain such as mountians, single-track, and water.

  • Still learning basic horsemanship skills such as catching, grooming, leading, and tacking up.

  • Physically fit to be in the saddle for 2-3 hours, or 6-8 miles a day.
